Department of Surgery
Facilities in the Department-
-
For Outpatients-
Surgical OPD No.27 - (Timing- 8.30am to 12.30pm)
Daily OPD except Sunday and National Holidays.
Run by each full time unit, consisting of senior staff, residents and interns.
Covers all General, Breast, Thyroid, Gastrointestinal, Hepato pancreato biliary , Pediatric , Urological, Neurosurgical cases.
Approximately 125 patients are seen per day and admissions are done wherever required.
Consultation/ Treatment is free, investigations are charged a nominal amount as per Government rules. Eligible patients are allowed to take benefit of Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayi Arogya Yojana ( free of cost medicines and investigations).
- Emergency Surgical Services-
Emergency surgical services are available round the clock (24 hours)
Emergency patients coming to hospital are attended in casualty (No 17) and first aid treatment is given. Patients are admitted requiring urgent surgical management for further management.
Trauma ward (15 beds) managed round the clock by trauma anaesthetists and surgeons.
Disaster / Mass casualty cases are attended in casualty (No 17) by on call units (with help from other units if needed) and patients requiring indoor management are admitted to wards.
- For Inpatients-
General Surgery wards- 2 male and 2 female wards.
Located in B block building, 3rd floor.
Special wards are made available in case of disaster/ major accidents.
Bed/ diet/ Special investigations are charged nominal amount as per government rules. MLC patients are treated free of cost.
Total no. of beds-Total 150 beds
- Emergency Surgical ward (Trauma Ward)-
Located in B block building, 3rd floor.
15 bedded trauma ward is equipped to handle critically ill / injured patients with the requisite ventilators and monitors.
A dedicated on call unit is available 24 hours. They are supported by the trauma anaesthetist and on call anaesthesia team.
- Burn Ward-
25 bedded well equipped functional burn ward, run by General surgery department is located at the C block.
- Operation Theater-
Operation theatre complex with four operation rooms, one septic operation room, CSSD with ETO facility is located at B block building, 3rd floor.
All major, minor, General, Breast, Thyroid, Gastrointestinal, Hepato pancreato biliary, Pediatric, Urological, Neurosurgical, Laparoscopic, Endoscopic procedures are performed for a nominal charge as per Government rules.
- Teaching Programmes-
The department of General Surgery undertakes teaching programmes for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate degree courses under MUHS and is recognized by MCI.
- MBBS-
150 students are admitted per year.
4.5 years course with 1 year internship programme.
Teaching includes- Didactic lectures, Guest lectures, tutorials , exposure to patients via 4 general wards, trauma ward, burn ward rotation, OPD, Operation theaters.
Assessment is done continuously throughout the year in the form of ward exams, internal assessment exams, prelim exams. Final MBBS exams are conducted by MUHS twice a year.
Interns undergo an orientation programme on trauma management, basic CPR technique during their surgery posting.
They are allowed to assist and perform minor ward procedures under supervision.
- Postgraduates (MS General Surgery) Course-
7 students are registered per year.
Admissions are by entrance examinations conducted by government.
This is a 3 year full time stipendiary residential training course.
They stay on campus and are available on duty 24 hours. On campus accommdation and leave benefits are provided. Residents are registered with a PG guide for their thesis.
PG teaching programme includes small group teaching, seminars, PG activities, ward clinics, Supervision of operative procedures, use of departmental library with free internet service.
Students participate in workshop on Research Methodology.
Residents are actively guided and encouraged to present departmental work in national and international journals, conferences and workshop.
5 Senior Resident posts are available for those who have completed a recognised three year surgical residential course or super speciality degree course.
- CMEs and Research-
The department conducts regular CME programmes, seminars and workshops.
Eminent members of the profession are invited for guest lectures and surgical demos.
Department conducted Guest Lecture by eminent oncosurgeon Dr.Fahim Goliwale on ‘ Recent trends in Management of Breast Cancer on 17/03/2017.
CME on Obesity Control : Effortless weight loss on 28 Jan 2016 held at Dr VM GMC, Solapur.
Department has successfully conducted a CME on ‘Sensitization to Cadaveric Organ Donation’ in March 2016 under the guidance of Dr.A.S.Varudkar.
Dr.A.S.Varudkar was organiser of Maha Avayav daan Abhiyaan 2016 from 30 Aug to 1 Sep 2016 conducted at DR VM GMC, Solapur.
Department has successfully conducted a CME on ‘ Introduction to Bariatric Surgery’ on 14th May 2017 under the guidance of Dr.R.D.Jaykar.
Research activities consist of departmental projects, postgraduation students thesis and participation in pharmaceutical clinical trials.
Under ICMR Dr.R.D.Jaykar undertaking ‘A Prospective study of relationship between Deep Vein Thrombosis and Homocystine related Group B vitamins.’
